In celebration of African American History Month, historian and genealogist Velma Thomas-Fann will be the guest speaker at Harford Community College on Wednesday, February 10, at 1 and 7 PM in Edgewood Hall, Room 132. A reception and book signing will be held immediately following each presentation. The general public is invited to the free event.
Fann has authored several books including the award-winning Lest We Forget: The Passage From Africa to Slavery and Emancipation. She is also the creator of the nationally-acclaimed Black Holocaust Exhibit in Atlanta. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in journalism from Howard University and a Master’s degree in international affairs from Emory University. Fann has served as an adjunct professor at Georgia State University, a research assistant at the Georgia Division of Archives and History, and has lectured at colleges, universities, and museums nationwide. In addition, she has served as a consultant for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the Tuskegee Human and Civil Rights Multicultural Center, and as a distinguished faculty member or the Penn Center Gullah Studies Institute on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. She has received numerous awards and serves on the advisory board of African American Folklore Magazine. Fann continues to research and write about African American history.
Additional activities planned at Harford Community College to celebrate African American History Month include two poster challenges that ask participants to identify contemporary and historical figures.
