Jay Van Deusen Named Rotary Club President

Jay Van Deusen, owner of Van Deusen Construction Company and Rainbow International of Northeast Maryland, has been named President of the Rotary Club of Bel Air, Maryland. Van Deusen, a member of the 50-person organization for 6 years, served as President Elect during the past year.

Van Deusen's annual goals for the Bel Air Rotary Club this year are focused on fundraising. Jay and the Board at the Rotary Club of Bel Air will provide scholarships to deserving students in Harford County totaling over $ 9,000 and most recently announced the Club will be supporting the Harford Family House in Aberdeen, Maryland with a $ 25,000 grant for rehabilitating housing for the group. The Harford Family House is the largest provider of transitional housing for homeless families with children in Harford County.

Van Deusen says, "I am in construction and am affected by the changes in our economy. But there are those who are certainly much more affected by the downturn. They need a house to live in, food to eat and the chance to learn new skills to help them thrive. This is not a handout, this is opportunity to stabilize and grow. Programs such as Harford Family House provide that opportunity. At Bel Air Rotary, we will continue to focus on increasing fundraising activity while most organizations are forecasting declines. I consider it a privilege to serve in this capacity and look forward to improving the quality of life of those families who need it most in Harford County."

About Rotary

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. In more than 160 countries worldwide, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 30,000 Rotary clubs.

"One of the things I find most amazing about Rotary International is the impact we can all have on such international health issues such as polio. Rotary, over the past 30 years, has virtually eliminated polio in the world. Over the next five years it will be eradicated. That is no small feat. Not the UN, not WHO, but Rotary International. To do this we have raised over 550 Million dollars to be used exclusively for this effort," adds Van Deusen.

Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community's business and professional men and women. The world's Rotary clubs meet weekly and are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.

The main objective of Rotary is service - in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today's most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals, and vocational and career development. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self.

Locally, the Bel Air Club was founded in 1928 by business leaders in the community. Currently there are 50 business leaders in Harford County who represent their businesses and their commitment to the greater Bel Air Community. Those interested can visit the clubs website --- click Website below.
