The Harford County Department of Public Works Christmas Tree Recycling Program, established in 1989, helps residents dispose of their old holiday trees. In the last 21 years, more than 90,000 trees have been turned in by residents for recycling, according to the DPW website.
The trees are turned in to one of the county’s two disposal sites, ground into mulch or composted, and made available to those who need it.
You can visit the Harford Waste Disposal Center Compost Facility at 3241 Scarboro Road in Street for three 30-gallon bags or cans of free mulch or compost. You must bring your own bag or 30-gallon trash can. Larger quantities are also available for purchase.
Christmas trees may be dropped off at the Scarboro site Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Trees may also be taken to the site at 703 North Tollgate Road in Bel Air. It is open Saturdays only from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Harford Sanitation Services is offering complimentary Christmas tree pick-ups. Collection will take place only on Saturday, February 5, and Saturday, February 19. Contact HSS at 1-877-457-0404 for more information.
